The 2025 edition broke a four-year run of rising costs. The reversal was a containment story: organisations detected and shut down breaches faster than at any point in nearly a decade, and a shorter breach is a cheaper breach.

Methodology
The IBM Cost of a Data Breach Report is produced with the Ponemon Institute. The 2025 edition is based on 600 organisations that experienced a breach between March 2024 and February 2025, across 16 countries and 17 industries. Costs are total organisational cost per breach, covering detection and escalation, notification, post-breach response, and lost business.
